Science Fair 2011
offers a fun and
exciting program
for people of
all ages.
An initiative of the Gold Coast City Council, the Gold Coast Science Fair is a key activity within the TechGC program. The TechGC team, part of the Economic Development Branch of the Economic Development Major Projects program, was successful in securing a grant from SCOPE, the National Science Week funding body to assist with the execution of the Gold Coast Science Fair.

Showcasing innovative technologies, demonstrations, activities and competitions, the Gold Coast Science Fair has a strong emphasis on education. It also offers hand-on, interactive involvement with the latest scientific technologies and paraphernalia and offers thrills for all ages and abilities.

This two day event is held during the last weekend of National Science Week, on 20 and 21 August 2011. Showcasing local scientific talent and hosting a range of educational programs, demonstrations and hands on activities, the Fair provides residents of Gold Coast city with a fun, practical and informative insight into scientific and technological advancements and career options.

The Fair is designed to encourage understanding and participation in science and technology. It is also a great day out with exhibits that will appeal to the entire family.


TECHGC

Initiated in 2009, the Gold Coast City Council’s TechGC program is a long term strategic program to support the growth and development of industries in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) on the Gold Coast by:

• developing a skilled local workforce
• supporting the development of local STEM companies
• promoting research and development in STEM products
• establishing the Gold Coast as a world leader in STEM education, research and development and industry

The programs objectives include:

Business GC

Business Gold Coast (BusinessGC) is Gold Coast City Council’s economic development arm and facilitates growth of key industries through its 2020 Economic Development Strategy.

To maintain a collaborative environment between government, industry and the community, BusinessGC is supported by the BusinessGC Advisory Board (BGCAB) made up of business representatives from leading industry bodies taking part in the strategic direction of the Gold Coast.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

National Science Week is Australia’s largest festival, celebrating science, innovation, mathematics, engineering and technology. Held annually in August, National Science Week attracts an audience of more than 1.5 million and hosts more than 1000 events across the nation.

Celebrating talents and achievements in science, engineering, technology and innovation, National Science Week showcases the modern application of science and its direct relevance to our daily lives. Events take place in every Australian state and territory, with the majority being free and open to the public so all Australians can get involved.

National Science Week is an Australian Government initiative supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), and industry partners, the CSIRO, the Australian Secondary Teachers Association and the ABC.
